With Birmingham being chosen to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022, it offers a fantastic opportunity to showcase all of the exciting things to see and do in the city.
A multi-sport event established in 1930 for members of the Commonwealth, today the Games features 6,600 sports men and women from across 71 nations and territories.
Birmingham is a fantastic city to host the games. With more canals than Venice, a buzzing cafe and nightlife scene, plus an abundance of shops, museums and theatres, we’ve picked our five favourite reasons to extend your trip following the Games.
1. Visit for History and Heritage
Known as the ‘City of a Thousand Trades’, Birmingham boasts a rich working heritage.
Find out more by exploring the brilliant Black Country Living Museum, get a taste for traditional inner city neighbourhoods in the National Trust’s Back to Backs or enjoy a browse around the modern-day Jewellery Quarter, responsible for producing more than 40% of the UK’s jewellery.
2. Visit for Arts and Culture
Looking to expand your knowledge on a trip to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games? The city is home to a wide variety of attractions such as the award-winning science museum ThinkTank, the Pen Museum and also the Coffin Works museum.
For an arty afternoon, head to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in the city centre, the Ikon Gallery for contemporary art or try The Barber Institute of Fine Arts. And if you’re a bookworm, no trip to Birmingham can be complete without a walk around the stunning Library of Birmingham, the largest public library in the UK.
3. Visit for Shopping and Nightlife
See if you can spot the City’s iconic symbol on a trip to the famous Bullring Shopping Centre, one of Europe’s largest malls.
Here you’ll find all of your favourite high street and designer shops under one roof. If you’re looking for something a little more quirky, take a walk to Birmingham’s Indoor and Rag Market.
To experience Birmingham’s nightlife, head to Broad Street where you’ll find an eclectic mix of bars, pubs and nightclubs. There’s also the Birmingham REP theatre, Symphony Hall and Hippodrome for a more dramatic evening in the city.
4. Visit for Family Adventures
For a sweet day out as a family, head to Cadbury World in Birmingham to discover more about the home of chocolate with Cadbury starting production in their Birmingham factory back in 1824.
The National Sea Life Centre offers hours of fun for all the family. Home to more than 2,000 creatures, it also holds the UK’s only 360° ocean tunnel. Or explore the city together by boat cruising down one of Birmingham’s scenic canals.
5. Visit for a Countryside Retreat
However you choose to enjoy your trip in the city of Birmingham, you’ll need somewhere to retreat to after all that exploring. Mallory Court Hotel and Spa is a luxurious country house manor just a 40-minute drive from Birmingham.
